Wardle lies at the edge of the Pennines, approximately 15 miles north east of Manchester and 3 miles north of Rochdale. It is unusual that it has two village greens, one of which forms the turning circle for the traffic. Another unusual aspect of the village is that it has no through roads. At Christmas, a tree is erected in the middle, where on Christmas eve at 6.30pm villagers gather and sing carols to the sound of one of the excellent Brass bands from Wardle High School. It is usually a cold and wet affair, but marks the start of Christmas for Wardle, and is always a good turn out. (See Photograph section Around the Tree) In December 1998 Granada Television filmed an episode of a Drama called "The Last Train" starring James Hazeldine, Treva Etienne, Nicola Walker, Steve Huison and Sacha Dhawan, in and around the village and in St. James' church, which caused quiet a bit of excitement.
