I'm emailing for a friend who is an Aussie descendant of the Wilde / Kay families of Rochdale. She would love any information on Emanuel Wilde & his wife Sarah Kay. She would also love to know if any of these families were mixed up with the 1811 riots. Hi, Just came across this website by chance, and thought it maybe worth a shot asking abt my family tree. I would appreciate any help tracing ancestors of Edmund Howard & Mary Bamford whom would be my g.g.g grandparents. Edmund Howard(abt 1812-1886) married Mary Bamford(abt 1811-1884) & were both born in Rochdale. I have notes - Mary Bamford's brother was one of the first 8 founders of the Rochdale Equitable Society. In the census's 1841,51&61 Edmund&Mary lived at 80 Knowle Syke Street, Rochdale. 1871census 67 Bull Green, Wuerdle&Wardle, & 1881census 114 Church Terrace, Wuerdle&Wardle. They had children Betty1835-1850, Mary 1837-1889, Isabella1839-1840, Edward 1842-, Emmanuel Irvine1844-1891, Emma1850-1932, & Edmund died in infancy. Other ggg. grandparents of interest with no ancestors yet are Nanny (or Nancy) Sutcliffe b. Haworth 1826-1897buried at Oxenhope who married abt. Jun1845 to John Earnshaw born in Haworth 1824-1882 buried at Oxenhope. Thanks heaps from Mary-Jane Howard |

I found your fantastic web page this evening. lived in wardle at # 7 Knowle Syke Street from 1975 to 1980, then immigrated to the USA with my family. Although it has been almost 27 years, a day does not go by where I do not think about my childhood friends and wonderful life, wondering what would have happened if we had not left. I wanted to see if anyone still lived in the village that I once knew. My maiden name was Roberts, and I had two sisters Linda (42 now) & Julie.(40 now) Thank you again for hosting this - It was a wonderful evening viewing all the beautiful village photos and remembering my childhood. Hello! I really enjoyed your website on Wardle. I have a couple of queries: 1.My family lived at Rydings farm, Wardle for many years -do you know of any history connected to it? They also lived for a time at a small-holding up on the moors called Meadownook about 1918 butI have not been able to trace this - is it recorded anywhere? 2. Are there any records for St. James School around 1918 -25? I have 2 photos of my Dad with his horse & milk cart at Rydings farm -would these be of interest for your website? Regards, Barbara Hartley
2nd email Hello again Julie, Thanks for your prompt reply. Hartley is my married name -my maiden name was FERN.
The family connection with Rydings Farm, Wardle is as follows:
Ada & Ernest Fern moved with their 3 children to Meadownook near Wardle around 1917. In 1919 Ernest was killed in an accident aged 36. His wife struggled to bring up the children but in 1922 felt obliged to take up an offer of marriage from Edmund Shore, a farmer of Rydings farm.
The family were badly treated by Mr. Shore & the boys, Ernest & Walter aged 11 & 13 were obliged to work on the farm for no pay for many years.. After Mr. Shore died the 2 sons took over the running of the farm. Ernest married in 1938 & continued to live there with his family until 1947
I have attached a photo of Ernest & Walter Fern with their horse & milk cart.

I am currently tracing my family tree through my mums line (Mills). There is a strong familyconnection to Wardle in the early to Mid 1800's (and possibly before!) I have just come across your wonderful website and wondered if you may be able to help me with any tips/info/pointers in order that I can progress. As I live in the midlands I have been mainly reseraching using the internet but have promised my Mum that we will visit the Wardle area in the spring or summer to see what we can find. I am trying to find any information on my Great Great Great Grandfather John Mills - who according to census records - was born in Wardle circa 1823.Also my Great Great Grandfather Alfred Mills born in Wardle circa 1848. His father John Mills was a "Fuller" at this time. The family link moves to Smithy Bridge later but definately begins in Wardle.I also have a letter written by a Great Aunt ( now deceased) which offers some interesting titbits - none of which I have managed to verify as yet."A few boys came from Gloucester with sheep to Wardle...one boy went in the ministry he was Adam Mills...his picture was hung in Wardle Chapel it may still be there...Methodist.."Anyway many thanks in advance for any help or advice you feel able to give - especially as you are probably inundated with such requests and the name Mills is very very common in the Rochdale area. Hi, I wonder if you might be able to help me??!! We are tracing our family who were Stotts who originated in Wardle during the 1800-1900's. We have particular interest in the fire at Wasp Mills in 1890 but seem to be unable to find any more information on it with the exception of the Rochdale Observer. We know that some of our family have lived at The Hollies, Field House (formerly Wasp House, belonging to the mills), Vineyard House and Great Howarth House. I wonder if you might be able to throw any light on these matters from your discussions with people? My email address is Hi, I wonder if you might be able to help me??!! Hi, Jackie Waters, nee Wood former Crossfield Rd resident. Here's a photo of my lovely Grandad Jim (Plater) and fellow committee members on The Wardle Co-op. He wrote the book that this photo was in in 1960. It's not scanned too good but I've sent you example pages. People will recognise lots of faces from the line up. I suppose it would have been taken in the Co-op building which suffered the fire at Christmas. I remember the shop and the bacon slicer there. Anyone remember St James school, Mr Rigby, Mrs Hodgkinson, Miss Randle ? ( I remember writing the date 6th June 1966 in my school exercise book in Mrs Hodkinson's class. Now it's nearly 06.06.06!) I reckon I get my writing ambitions from my Grandad Jim! I also do competitions and apparently Grandad Jim was forever winning cash prizes back in the 60s from the national papers. I had no knowledge of this , so I wonder is this just coincidence or perhaps inherited behaviour patterns!? I have fond memories of feeding grandad Jim's hens in his "pen" at the top of Crossfield Road. I've just set up a "memory book" business called onceuponalife and my project for the summer will be to write a book "Memories of my home village ,Wardle " If anyone would like to contribute their memories of the village please email me at enquiries@onceuponalife.co.uk. (I'll get Wardle's flying saucer in print yet!!) Thanks Jackie Waters |

Please could you help me? I am researching my fathers side of the family and have traced them back as far as Jonathan Leach b.1780 who lived in Wardle. The 1851 census has the family living at 9 Wardle. His son Richard aged 42 is described as a Flannel Manufacturer employing 12. Please could you tell me where he would have worked. Also is there any one else looking for the Leach's
Looking at the census again it just says Wardle. Richards brother Edmund was a Beer retailer and his address also just says Wardle as does John (Victualler) and James (retired traveller).Other addresses that crop up are Knorrl Syke, Trap Lane , Flock Hale and Small bridge!! Are they all in the surrounding area? I live in LIverpool (where some of the family moved to after the mill closed) but my sister lives in Ainsworth not far away. DAVID MCALLEY |

Trying to verify family connection with Atkinsons who possibly lived in John Street Wardleworth, Rochdale in 1841 (UK Census 1841) Family: John Atkinson Aged 49 yrs;Phoebe Atkinson aged 56 yrs; Isabella aged abt 20 yrs and Matthew aged abt 13 yrs. According to my info there should have been Thomas who would have been abt 17 yrs. Thomas and Isabella where christened at St Pauls in Blackburn in July 1824. Their parents were given as John and Pheby. Any further information would be of value. David Atkinson |

Dear Julie - First let me congratulate you on the excellent job that you have done on the Wardle website. Perhaps you can help me in my effort to gather info re my Stott family. I have traced my Stott family back to Bench Carr, located near to Wardle (now just foundation rubble) below the clay pit. James Stott was born there in 1573, as well as his son &grandson, Thomas (1595) & Robert (1632). I visited Wardel in 1998 in an effort to learn something of Bench Carr & the Stotts who have lived there but I was unsuccessful in contacting anyone who could be of help. Do you know of anyone who lives there who could share with me info re the Stotts who have lived there, i.e., John Stott flannel manufacturer; or anyone who has might have info re Bench Carr. I found Wardle to be a most delightful village. Thank you for taking the time to consider my requests. Richard L. Stott, Ph.D. Newport Beach, CA 92660 (949) 760 1781; |
