My husband was Charles Nathan Wardle Jr. His great-grandfather was James Evertt Wardle born in Jersyville ,Ill on April 7, 1876. He was adopted into the Wardle family. His real family name was Shuman. I am not sure if this is the right spelling of the last name. People have told me he was probably related to the Wardle's and that's how he was adopted. I believe his mother probably married a Shuman and she died or was unable to take care of him. I know that James married Ethel Jennie Heaton on February 14, 1902 in Macomb,Ill. James and Ethel had a son Joesph Wardle. Joesph married Dessie and they had seven children my fath-in-law Charles Nathan Wardle SR. If you have any information that would be of help to me please e-mail me. Thank You. Sincerely Susan Wardle |

Anne Wardle 16 May 1760- 9 September 1816, married Joseph Gould (my gggg grandfather) 28 July 1783 in Manchester. They had 10 children I think, all born Manchester The only information I have regarding her parents is William Wardle of Bosley co Staffs and he may well have been married to a Mary Gould 14th June 1759 linking the family on two fronts. I was delighted to discover your website on the family of Wardles. An elderly cousin of mine has traced our branch of Wardles on Tyneside as far back as my namesake JOHN WARDLE who was born in Long Horsley (Alnwick Northumberland) in 1776. He is understood to have moved to Long Benton on Tyneside where my branch of the family seems to have remained in the areas of Wallsend and Tynemouth. Names on the family tree are the same as many on your website such as John, Henry, Edward, James, Graham, Margaret, Mary, William and others which suggests the possibility of some connection or perhaps coincidence. Many of the family were miners in the Tyneside and it is quite possible that branches of the family moved far and wide. I have a family tree and would be happy to email it to anyone who wishes to contact me at my email address below. It would be very exiting to discover a distant relative with John (1776) as a common ancestor. John Wardle (b. 1943) |

My father's name was Wardle and at a family reunion this past weekend, I was told by a very old auntie that the family was at one time in the pottery business. I was told I could view this pottery, etc. on-line. Well, I have found your site and am interested in providing information and also in finding out more. What I do know is that my great-grandfather was Frederick A. Wardle, and his wife, Amy, that the family came to America in the early 1930s. I am curious about the Wardle pottery, especially since the art director of the Wardle Pottery for a few years was Frederick Rhead. He subsequently went to Zanesville, Ohio to work for the Weller Pottery Company. The Weller family descendents are great friends of mine! Very small world. Thanks for any info you can provide. i am researching my great grandmothers family history. she was Florence Wardle whom married William Johnson. Florence was born 1893 Basford, Nottingham and was the daughter of Eli Wardle anmd Ellen. Her siblings were priscilla b. 1890 Clara b. 1893 Sam b 1895 Eli b 1898 and Tom b 1900. Eli's father was Samuel b.1845. Eli and Samuel were both coal miners and all of the family were born and bred in Nottingham. Any linkage??? Would love to hear from you if there is. You may also wish to know that Florence died of Cancer around the pelvic colon with secondary cancer to the lungs. Our family have been tested for a BRCA2 Gene which is a rogue gene known to cause cancer to ovaries breasts and in the men can cause prostate. it is thought that the gene is passed through the Wardle line, and although Florence die with it around her pelvic colon, it usually hides the ovarian cancer. I am descended from Thomas Wardle, my great great grandfather, born c 1804 in Gt Grimsby. By 1844 he was trading as a Coal Merchant in South Ferriby, Lincs, and married to Jane Johnson. Their children were Anne Elizabeth, Jeremiah, Charles (died aged 3 in 1844) and Edwin. Jeremiah was my great grandfather and had a sister, Jennie Gertrude, about whom I know nothing. Nor do I know anything about Edwin except that he was a ship's mate. Anne married William Robinson from Winteringham, Lincs, and they moved to Middlesborough between 1878 and 1881 before moving to Salford where they were at the time of the 1901 Census. Their children were John Arthur (born to Anne before she married and possibly not William's child), Adeline Elizabeth, Frederick William, Percy Edwin and Thomas H. All children born in S Ferriby except Percy born in Middlesborough. More than that I do not know. Any info gratefully received. Godfrey Wardle |

I am trying to find out a bit more about my paternal grandfather. He was named John Ellis Wardle but was called Jack. He lived in Manchester about 1945 and may have spent some time in Guildford in 1944. I think he served in the airforce during the 2nd world war. I believe he was married to my grandmother Molly Dibden, although they may not have married. He died in about 1946 and Molly returned to Hampshire with their two children who were later adopted by her 2nd husband. My father, Jack's son - John Ellis Adams - has recently died aged 60 - and I was keen to undestand a bit more about his paternal family as he never knew them. Many thanks Kirsty Adams I can be contacted at

Hello Arthur, I enjoyed reading your post. I am researching family history in Hanley and Church Lawton, as well as several other sites on the Canal. The surnames that I have in this area are OSWALD, SIMMS, BOSWELL, DOBSON, CLARK, HEATH. Curiously 2 OSWALD sons have a middle name of WARDLE. We thought that may have been their grandmother's maiden name, but after receiving birth certs that theory was wrong. The SIMMS & BOSWELLs were Canal boatmen so I am wondering if they were commemorating the WARDLE LOCK or their boat was named WARDLE. I have a piece of very old hand painted pottery from the area and I was interested to read that Wardle made pottery in Hanley. I believed that pottery was one of the commodities that my SIMMS & BOSWELLs transported on their boats. If you have records of any WARDLE marriages to any of the names I have mentioned, I would find that encouraging. I'll look closer at my plate and see what else I can learn about it. I really enjoyed reading your posting and I thank you for adding more info for my search. Michele Crawford ON, CANADA |

I belong to a branch of Wardles listed in Brancepeth in 1800s at Boggle Hole and Quarry Bank who later moved to Melsonby in North Yorkshire. The Wills are in the Durham Records Office. So far we have established that a Jane Wardle (d.o.b. 1813) who moved from there to West Hartlepool with her two sons Robert (my greatgrandfather) and Thomas. The family names seem to continually repeat: Thomas, Robert, John and Jane, Do you have them in your family tree? Jo |

Hi there was an artical in a Sydney newspaper about someone in search of John Wardle. Unfortunately, the email address they gave, or was printed doesn't work. So I decided to do a search and found you. The artical went a bit like: In search of John Wardle A master mariner born 1924 in england, lived at Bulli 1960-65 Wife Pearl, son Peter, and daughter. Also descendants of Joseph Wardle, Newcastle area from 1920. My Dad, thinks that there may be a relationship somewhere as Joesph Wardle was his grandfather, and earlier relations came from Durham. We are a bit light on information but have started a family tree, and you can see what we've done thus far, but clicking on the link below. If you have anything else that we can add or correct, then please let us know. From what we know Richard married Annie Willis, daughter of Joseph Willis and Susanna Hepple, on 16 Dec 1879. (Annie Willis was born on 1 Mar 1860 in Thornton st, Westoe, Durham, England, died on 23 Mar 1937 in Brooks Street Wallsend and was buried on 25 Mar 1937 in Methodist Cemetery Wallsend.) There children were: a.. George Llyod Wardle+ (my Granddad) a.. Mary Wardle a.. Susan Wardle a.. Ada Wardle a.. Robert Wardle a.. William Wardle I'm not sure where John would fit into all of this, maybe as the son of a brother or sister of Joesph. we don't have any information about siblings ;-( It would be great to know some more if you have it, and are willing to share it. Cheers for now Antony |

I am looking for any information about The artist/teacher who used to teach at Bolton College of Art in the 1950's. He was my professor of drawing, and he is probably now deceased, but I wondered if there are any examples of his work still extant? Where would I search? Bolton College of Art is now another institution, so it's impossible to trace his work through that avenue. I'll understand if you cannot help, there seem to be so many John Wardles, and I'm sure he had another name. He studied at the Slade School of Art as a young man, but he was well into his 50's by the time I came to know him. I teach art in Texas, and wanted to see if I could find any images of his work to show my students. Barbara Holland |

Dear Arthur I found the email you posted on the WARDLE website - see below:- I am getting in touch because I have a WARDLE in my family tree. I have been researching the TAYLOR and HEAPY families of Macclesfield, Cheshire and drew a blank. I had got back to the marriage of Thomas Taylor (my ggg grandfather) who married Martha Knowles in 1845. I sent off for their wedding certificate, hoping to find out who Thomas Taylor's father was and was quite surpised when I got the wedding certificate as his father's name was given as HENRY WARDLE - who I can only guess was Thomas Taylor's step-father. It looks like Thomas's natural father had perhaps died and Thomas's mother had then married Henry WARDLE. So far I have had no luck finding out more about Henry Wardle. Neither do I know the name of Henry's wife. Thomas was over 21 when he married so I can only guess that Henry was at least 20 years or more older than Thomas - which would put Henry's time of birth at around 1800 or before. On the wedding certificate Henry Wardle's occupation is given as 'Silk Manufacturer' - I don't know if this means 'cottage industry' manufacturing or manufacturing on a bigger scale. Thomas Taylor was a Macclesfield silk weaver, as were many of my TAYLOR and HEAPY ascendants. I wonder if your Henry Wardle was a descendant of my Henry Wardle ? So many Macclesfield silk weavers moved over to Paterson in the late 1800s - I wouldn't be at all surprised to find I have relatives over there. Thank you and congratulations on a great site Carol Taylor |

My name is Wayne Wardle and I was just looking up our last name on the net.It seems the Wardle's here in the U.S came from England or Australia. How much do you know about the Wardle history? Do you know where we firstcame from for sure? I enjoyed reading about Wardle village that is something. Here in Lexington Kentucky where I live, I have found some very old Tomb Stones in the Lexington Cemetery. One Name was Zachery Wardle and another Seith Wardle, they were from Manchester England. My Grandfather name was Henry Wardle he died when he was I think 54 years old.He left behind 5 sons and 4 daughters. All of us have asked them who was their Grandfather and none of them can tell us. I find that so hard to believe. They say our Grandfather never talked about them. All we know is that he had some Sisters named ( Aunt Thelma Ride Wardle and Aunt Liz). There was also a John Wardle that came from Manchester England as well and I'm thinking he may have been kin or that is were we started. I have an Uncle that is also named John Wardle. seems that the name John was carried on a great deal. Anyway Share with me what you can, one day I would love to be able to afford the trip their. I will tell you what I can about us here. Bye for now Regards Wayne Wardle

Hello: My birth name was Wardle. My father, Archer Wardle, was born in Butter Knowle, Co. Durham, England in 1892. I have traced his father and mother John W. and Annie Wardell (as spelled by the 1881 census) who lived in Lynesack & Softly, Durham, England at that time. My father emigrated to Canada in 1920, where I was born. I now live in Portland, Oregon, USA. I understand the name began with Sir Guilliame de Waredale, who was one of the knights who fought with William the Conquerer. Not only his family, but people who worked for him took the name de Waredale, which was changed over the centuries to other derivatives. UPDATE My grandfather, John W. I have a family connection to the Wardle Engineering Company, of Elsinore Road, Old Trafford, Manchester, that existed from at least the 1920s to the 1950s. (There was a second branch at Secunderabad, India). I can find only two internet references: 1. The Indian branch had a private railway line 2. The company made heating components for the SS Canberra (1950s). If anyone has any information or personal connections, I would be pleased to hear. Also any contacts for Wardles of Butlers Court, Preston, Lancashire (address from 1901 England & Wales census at www.census.pro.gov.uk ). Nigel Cooper, London, UK |

Hello, My name is Arthur David Wardle, and I reside in the Northeastern part of Pennsylvania, USA. I am interested in the origins of the name "Wardle" and am aware of Wardle Village near Rochdale and a Wardle Village near Nantwich-Crewe in Cheshire. My great-grandparents, Henry Wardle and Eliza Brown Wardle, were both born in Macclesfield. They emigrated to America in 1878 and were married four years later in 1882. They lived in Paterson, N.J. where they worked in the silk mills as weavers. I have since learned there was a large silk industry in Macclesfield and thus the connection to Paterson, N.J. I am pleased to find your web site, because, for years, I have been interested in the history of both "Wardle" villages. I have discovered and collect pottery manufactured by the Wardle Pottery Co. of Hanley, England. They were in operation from the mid-eighteen hundreds through the early nineteen hundreds when they were bought by another larger pottery manufacturer. I enjoy corresponding with other like-minded "Wardle" individuals, and always learn things of interest from all who I am able to communicate with. Sincerely yours, Arthur D. UPDATED EMAIL |

I'm writing this letter in regards to my grandfather and his original family. He was born to a Mr. Gordon Eugene Wardle and a Ms. Amelia Kerr. The last thing we know about this family is that both parents passed on in an auto accident, and my Grandfather was adopted under the family name Nicholson. My grandfathers name is William Charles, born March 20 1921, at Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you have any info could you please contact me, Aaron Gamble. This is a matter of finding my real family or not. Thanx Aaron |

My father emigrated to New Zealand in 1924, but the rest of his family stayed in England. However, I have visited them and met most of my first cousins. One of them, Mary Mawby nee Wardle, had researched much of her genealogy before she died about 1992. Our family had been based in Bishop Auckland at least as far back as my grandfather (born 1851). Mary traced the line back to our great great great grandfather Mark Wardle of Newcastle, probably born about 1750. One of his children was our ancestor Anthony Wardle, and another was Mark Wardle of Manchester. Apparently he was imprisoned in 1819 in Leicester Castle for publishing something political - I suspect to do with the Peterloo Massacre.Apparently a letter exists that he wrote to his wife and children from prison. Mary thought he was edior or owner of theManchester Guardian, but this was founded only in 1721. If there is any connection, it should be discoverable in the Manchester Guardian Archives. My uncle, a doctor of Bishop Auckland, told me that he believed that the name Wardle is derived from Weardale, and that in local speech the two words are indistinguishable. However, Mary considered that our family originated in Northumberland. Peter Wardle, Christchurch, New Zealand |

I'm looking for members of Joseph Julius Wardle's family. Joseph was born in South Africa in the early 1900s. His father was also born in South Africa but his grandfather came from Ireland. Joseph had some brothers, but we do not know who or where they are. Joseph had three children, my father Alan who now runs a safari lodge in Zambia, my aunt Norma who is a medical doctor in Cape Town and my uncle Ian who was killed in Zimbabwe in 1989. Any clues anyone? Thank you. |
Like Carl Wardle, I am looking to see if Wardle Village is where the surname originated. I have my tree from Whitefield (18, 19, 20th century) which traces back to Rochdale to a James Wardle 1556 from Brunege (I don't know where this "Brunege"is in Rochdale i live just south of Oxford and cannot find this, even any streets named this?) his will in 1608 mentioned that he is from Brunege, Rochdale. Does anyone know where this is? Robert Wardle

The surname Wardle derives from Werdale and the first recorded owner of the surname was William de Werdale in 1216. Over the years this name has been corrupted into many forms including Wardale, Wardill, Wardel, Wardall and Wardle itself. The name means 'from Weardale' and the first owner of the surname will have originated from Weardale in County Durham. ps. There is a Wardle village in Cheshire and this according to the doomsday book this is the first mention a village/name Wardle so I'm not sure which is correct . |

Wardle (Wardell in the 1881 British Census) was born on July 13, 1855. At the time of that census, he lived in Butterknowle Lynesack & Softly, sub-district of Hamsterley, Co. Durham.

An email to Arthur D. Wardle Above |

Make all emails subjects Wardle please as I delete a lot without opening.

My reply Wardle has been here before records began we know this because we have found traces of iron age in the area. We are a village which is quite a lot smaller than a town. I honestly dont think the name Wardle has anything to do with the area. |
My ancestor Thomas Wardle emigrated from Leicestershire in 1831, landing in Philadelphia. I have unbroken records since then. Thomas was apparently a bookbinder or printer in Philadelphia. Samuel was a physician in Cincinnati William was a dentist in Kentucky Charles William an engineer in Kentucky Charles Edward an engineer in Kentucky Charles Edward, Jr., a non profit administrator in Kentucky and now Florida C. Jo |

Hi - just saw your site and was really interested insome of the info on there. My dad's name was Paul Jay Wardle and he was born inOhio (not sure where) January 28th, 1938 and died onMay 9th, 1998. Wondering if there is any information about the Wardle's that came from Ohio. know he has a sister, but not sure of the rest fo his family. He moved around a bit when he joined the Navy, but we settled in San Diego, California until he retired, then moved to Oklahoma. Most of the immediate family still lives in Okla, but I'm in San Diego now. From talking with family, I THOUGHT we were from Wales... but now I'm wondering if someone got it wrong down the road. Any help in tracking my dad's family history would be great and really interesting... really looking for a family crest. Thanks. Rollin Monroe Wardle |

I am trying to find out who the parents of Edward WARDLE were. If I am right Mary was Josephs father's sister. This family branch originates in Bakewell and Cotton.I don't know if this information is of interest to you or anyone else or that there may be new leads for me. Linda |
