I'm seeking information about the family of William Butterworth (c1793-1837) and Mary Leach (c1796-1858). According to the IGI at least one of their sons, Robert Leach Butterworth, was born in Wardle(worth?) in 1826. Other sons are John Leach Butterworth,  Benjamin and Robert. It is probably fair bet the the latter two also had Leach as a second name.
Thanks, Ros
Currently tracing my family history and have discovered that my Gt Gt Grandparents came from Wardle and Smallbridge, if anybody can assist I'd be grateful.

Need help finding my greatgrandfather.
He was a Rochdale millowner, who build streets of houses to accommodate his work force.  These streets said to be name after his two daughters.  He also owned jewellers' shops.
Don't know his name, but I can complete the fascinating history from 1876, when I find it!  Think his mill was probably in Wardle, because his partner (my great-grandmother, Frances Lord) was a cotton warper and must have walked to work.  Frances remained a friend of the family for life.  My great-grandfather recognised my (illegitimate) grandfather, his son (Joseph), who was born in 1876 at 12, Cromwell Street in the Heywood Ward.  Great-grandfather paid for his lodgings and upkeep, first with Joseph Bamford, at 7, Dixon Yard, Wardleworth.  Here, he is listed as Joseph Bamford's 'granson' (sic).  Joe Lord's mother and half-sister, Alice Hannah Lord, lived at 1, Thompson Yard, Elliott Street.
So - can anyone tell me: who was my great-grandfather, because my second cousin, descended from Alice and now living in California, is also trying to find him.  And what was the name of his mill?
Many thanks,
Jean Holmes

I was wondering if you could help me.
I have some names from Milnrow and Rochdale whom I can not find much
information on. Somewhere, there is an important relation to me.
My grandmother, Annie Gee was born in Romiley, 1890.
Her mother was Martha Kenyon. I believe Martha was born in 1860-1861, either Cheshire, or Lancashire. Possibly in Castleton, Lancs.
Martha died in 1897( Newton Godley ) and her husband, Edwin Gee, remarried to Mary Ann Fletcher, wife of deceased Simon Fletcher, in 1899.
Mary Ann was the daughter of Joe and Margaret Band. Somewhere down the line, there is a Whitehead, Kenyon, Gee connection.
My grandmother emigrates to the United States  in 1912 with a woman named Rachel Cryer, born in Milnrow. Rachel is listed on the ships list as Annie's mother.  Rachel lists her next of kin as James (?) Whitehead of Dyer Street in Milnrow. The passenger list, departing from Liverpool to New York, states for Rachel: Cryer, Rachel  United Kingdom, English (born Milnrow) Providence, U. S. A. March 10, 1912 42yFM ( widowed, I believe ) Baltic I believe Rachel Cryer was born Rachel Whitehead, daughter of John ( Milnrow) and Jane
(Newhey) Whitehead, of Butterworth, Lancs. ( 1881 census )
Everything is very fuzzy. I believe there is a Kenyon, Whitehead connection and my grandmother was either living with the Whiteheads, Kenyons, or a sibling of Edwin Gee after her fathers remarriage. She and Mary Ann Fletcher did not get along, and I believe Annie left her fathers home, probably involuntarily, shortly after the marriage, she was only 9 when her father remarried. Is there any possibility of connecting with somebody who may be familiar with any history or records of these families? I would love to know where my grandmother, Annie Gee, was living after her fathers' re marriage. Who the kindly people wewre were who took her in and raised her until she met her future husband, Sam Woodhead, who was living in Stalybridge with his family, while my grandmother was bounced around after her biological mothers' death, whomever it was, they did a good job, as her life was pretty much settled down here in the United States. Would you have any clues, or be aware of someone who may have?
Thank you for your time.
Ruth Beck
My name is Susan Peach and I have 2 connections with Wardle. My Father, Clifford Haigh, was Clerk to the council during the war and until 1950, when he moved to become Clerk to the Council at Milnrow. I still have the desk he was given as a leaving present.
My Mother Lizzie's grandparents were Martha and Joshua Greenwood and they came from Cornholme on their marraige to farm at Higher Dobbin, this would have been around 1865, Great Grandad, Joshua died aged 56 and Martha moved to 25 Alfred Street, Littleborough. They had around 13 children but only 5 survived. Their eldest daughter, Susey Hetty married Abraham Mills and they were my grandparents.  Incidentally Abraham was the first person to stand as a Labour candidate in the local elections in Littleborough I think he got 28 votes !
With reference to the Suffolk connection, My Dad's grandparents on his Mother's side came from there and he always said he would find where they came from. He never got round to it  and though he died in 1986, it gave me a lot of pleasure to be able to say,3 years ago when I stood in a little church in Rickinghall, "I've found them Dad".

If you were to check the census forms youd find dozens of people from Suffolk came to the area in the 1850's and 1860's They came to find work, because where they lived although beautiful, had no industry, so when the mills were built the men seemed to come up, find jobs and a home then send for their families.
I moved last year from Rochdale to the Highlands of Scotland, I have 4 daughters, 8 grandchildren and they are ALL aware of their Wardle, Littleborough and Cornholme connections ( also Suffolk)
Does anyone remember the Haigh Family or the Greenwoods( this I think would be doubtful), but if anyone knows anything aout Higher Dobbin I would be delighted to hear about it, I'd also like to know more about the commemorative wood. As there is no memorial to my parents.
Thank you Susan E Peach
Greetings from Hobart Tasmania. (the island state which hangs off the south-eastern corner of Australia)
You might be interested in the following. My mother's maiden name was Cook. I have a copy of the Cook family tree which goes back to the Suffolk village of Polstead in 1635.  My great-great grandfather, Thomas Cook of Suffolk came to Australia early in the 19th Century. The family tree notes a brother, Robert Keningale Cook to have been a dean of Colchester cathedral.  A cousin, doing some family history research found the death notice of Thomas Cook in a copy of a Sydney newspaper of the time, circa 1875. It noted that the deceased was the 'brother of Rev R K Cook of Rochdale UK.'   Rochdale is a long way from Suffolk.
I have always been fascinated by the name, Keningale. My name is Kenneth Robert and I have always joked that if ever I wanted a nom de plume it would be Robert Keningale. A few month ago I typed Keningale into the Google search site and found the website of St James church, Wardle. There I learned how RK Cook, as rector of Smallbridge decided Wardle should have its own church and set about raising the funds to build one.  It was a bit of family history I came across unexpectedly and gratefully. Co-incidentally, our pastor at the church we attend in Hobart is Mr Wardle!!
Keningale was the maiden name of Thomas and Robert Cook's grandmother, Mary.
Thank you for your site on present day Wardle. Very interesting.
Sincerely yours,
Ken Short

I thoroughly enjoyed a wander around your site and town .The photographs were terrific and the site very informative. I was saddened to see that the church was being made into apartments.

Will the graveyard be protected?

I have been researching my family tree, (a difficult task from Australia) however I knew that my great grandfather was born in Wardle. Although he died in Oldham,my Mum always told me that he was buried in Wardle. Do you know if there a record or register of gravestone inscriptions anywhere? I now have my great granddads birth and death certificates.

My great Grandad's name  was Silvester Royds and he was born in Wardle Fold on 19.2.1855 and died in Shaw Oldham on 28th June 1902 aged 47 years. He was married to Mary Cheetham born 15.1.1856 in Shawclough Brow Spotland. I now know from the certificates that his parents were John Royds who gave his occupation as a Green Grocer of Wardle Fold and Sarah Royds ( formerly Lord). I will be visiting Wardle in a few months time and would like to make an effort to look for the grave of Silvester or his wife Mary or his parents John and Sarah Royds.

Do you know what the" Fold" means at the end of Wardle? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards
Alison
In researching my grandmother's Usher family from Rochdale, I have come across the following information, but I am always looking for more
William Usher had 2 children born in Ireland - Bridget (abt 1856) and Joseph Michael (abt 1854) and 2 born in Scotland - Edward (abt 1859) and John (abt 1860). The William Usher family emigrated from Ireland to Scotland between 1856 and 1859, later moving south to Lancashire England by 1881
William Usher was deceased prior to the 1881 UK census.
There is a death listed for a William Usher in Salford (Manchester) in 1874, but I do not know if it is applicable.
Son Joseph Usher was known to have married Elizabeth O'Hara and lived in Todmorden and Bacup. Joseph Usher was known to have died by drowning in the Manchester Canal.
In the 1881 Lancashire census, Widow Bridget Usher is shown with her unmarried daughter (also) Bridget and reamining unmarried son Edward living in Wardleworth, Lancs
Edward Usher and Catherine Welsh had 13 children, of which only the 3 oldest girls lived to adulthood. Margaret, Mary Ellen and Bridget Agnes (Beatrice). I have no record of the other names or the burial locations of the other 10 children
There was a family oral history that said the Edward Usher emigrated in 1900 to America where he obtained work in Princeton New Jersey as an Iron Worker. The remaining members of his family, wife-Catherine and daughters Margaret, Mary and Bridget, emigrated a few years later, following him to Philadelphia in 1908
it seems they were constantly moving within the area
In 1881, Edward Usher was with his mother and sister at 8 North lane
In 1884, a daughter Margaret was born with the address listed as 1 castle terrace
In 1901 they were living at 14 Samuels Court
Edwards wife - Catherine Usher's maiden name was Welsh and she listed her place of birth as Newcastle on Tyne
I can find none of these 3 different street locations listed on any current internet map sites for Rochdale/Wardle or Wardleworth
If anyone has any information on what happened to the daughter, Bridget Usher or other information on this Usher family, I would appreciate hearing from them.

Ben MacDonald

Can anyone help me with research into my grandfathers past.  His name was Harold Vincent Shepherd ( b:1900) and he was married to a Lizzie Turner and had 4 sons, Eric, Frank, Geoff & Alan.  My grandfather had a cobblers/barber shop in Smithy Bridge village in the 1940/50's and i believe was a charactor. I know that his father (through birth certificates) was a gentleman known as John and married a lady called Mary Jackson in 1875 and that they both worshipped at St  James Church in Wardle (grave found there). Any information would gratefully be received.

He married Lillie Bamford daughter of Henry Bamford who, I think , was the brother of John Stott's wife whose name I do not know. My grandparents Farrow Tattersall , Lillie and my mother Maud came to the US in 1900.

I am trying to find out more about my grandmother's family. Her name was Sarah Hulme, b 31 oct 1885, Wardle, and she had a brother John Hulme, who married a Florence Clegg. Sarah married John Dorning Hurst, who I am told worked for Wardle Council for a while, but as a Civil Engineer he later worked all around the country, taking his family (my father John Hulme Hurst and his sister Joan Hurst) with him. Joan remembers going to school in Wardle, and I have a book of my grandmother's which was awarded to her in 1909 by Rochdale Education Committee, Technical School.
Thankyou
Sue Coulter (nee Shepherd)
